While many people believe that cold brew coffee is a hot new trend, it has actually been around for many years. Recently, however, it has made quite a comeback in the coffee world. There are many different versions of cold brew, but the Kyoto-style was made popular in Kyoto Japan.
It is believed that this style of cold brew has been used since the 1600’s. This brewing method is a time-consuming method since the coffee is brewed drop by drop. Choosing to brew coffee this way means that you are able to create a very light bodied coffee, which makes it a great treat on those hot days.
How It Works
Cold brew is also known as cold water extraction of cold press. The process works by steeping coffee grounds in room temperature or cold water for an extended period of time. The beans need to be coarsely ground to help release their flavor into the water.
After the grounds have sat in the water for at least a day, they are filtered out by using a paper coffee filter or a fine metal sieve. This works to produce a very concentrated coffee, that is then diluted with water or milk. Coffee has a certain acidic compound that is only activated when the beans are heated. But using this method allows you to be able to produce a smoother, less bitter and acidic tasting coffee.
Cold brew is an easy way to some delicious coffee. It is easy to make cold brew coffee from the comfort of your own home. So it is no surprise that there many different ways to create some great tasting cold brew coffee. However, all recipes are made up of the same basic formula: cold water, coarsely ground coffee, and long brewing time.
Taking the time to find the best method to make cold brew can take some time. But changing different variables in the process will produce different results. For instance, having a longer brew period will result in a stronger cup of coffee, while using a finely ground coffee will make a cloudier drink.
Having the right equipment can help you produce some great tasting cold brew. Good news is that there are quite a few brewing contraptions that you can buy. The most practical option is the Toddy system, while it might not be the prettiest thing to look at it can create some great tasting cold brew. Another, more affordable option is to use a French press. However, if you are wanting to try out Cold brew without spending money, you can use some items from around your house.
What You Will Need:
-Large Mason Jar
-Muslin sheet, or paper towels
-Coarsely ground coffee beans
What To Do:
- Coarsely grind your coffee beans. You are wanting to get the consistency of breadcrumbs, anything finer will result in a cloudy coffee.
- Place coffee grounds in the bottom of the jar and cover them with cold water. The best ratio to use is a 1:8 coffee to water ratio, but for a stronger coffee try using a 1:7 coffee to water ratio.
- Gently stir until everything is well combined. Put the lid on the jar and leave it alone for 18-24 hours.
- To remove the larger grounds you are going to use the sieve to strain the coffee into the large bowl. After you have discarded those grounds, place your muslin sheet of paper towels into the cleaned out sieve. Then strain the coffee back into the jar.
- Repeat the straining process at least 2 more times. Or until you no longer see any murky residue at the bottom of your containers.
- Serve your cold brew over ice. If your drink is too strong you can opt to water it down by adding water to your brew. Cover and refrigerate your cold brew.
There are many different ways that you can spruce up your cup of cold brew. The most popular option is to add in different flavors with the grounds before you start to brew it. Infusing flavors into your coffee this way will ensure that you are getting the most flavor out of the ingredients that you have added.
-2 oz of Bourbon
-1-2 Tbsp of sugar
-1 tsp Vanilla extract
-1 tsp Almond extract
Simply mix all of these ingredients in with your coffee grounds, add in the water. Then continue with the normal cold brewing method as before.
This cold brew is a great option for those warm summer mornings. All you need is a medium-sized pomegranate. Slice off the top of the pomegranate by the navel. It will have 4-6 sections that you slice up. Scrape out the seeds using a spoon or your hands.
Then add the seeds to coffee grounds, and give them a little squeeze. Doing this will release some of the juices and open up the seeds. Continue the brewing process as normal. The result will be a very concentrated cold brew that you can dilute with water.
